What's an LTI?

Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) is an education technology specification developed by a global consortium. It means there's a method by which a learning management system (like Canvas) "calls up" and communicates with external applications. In short, an LTI is a Canvas integration for a tool that isn't natively part of Canvas. (Also known as a third party application, or app.)

Many third party apps are available in Canvas. For example, in addition to Zoom, you may be using Google docs in Canvas, Pronto, or an online tutoring service. Think of Canvas as your home base, and LTIs are your cable/internet service, gas, electricity, garbage/recycling pickup, etc., connecting you to other applications outside of Canvas.

There are two distinctly different ways Zoom can be managed in Canvas! We will cover how to schedule Zoom events in Canvas in Week 2!

For the purposes of this class, you're asked to work primarily in the Zoom App/Client.

Using the Canvas Zoom LTI is optional!
If you choose to try out the Canvas Zoom LTI, we strongly recommend you check with your local college Zoom support to find out which LTI you should use.

Traditional Canvas ConferZoom LTI

The traditional Canvas ConferZoom LTI is shown in the image below. The main email address you use to sign in to your ConferZoom account must be the same as the email you use to log into Canvas. If you are a part-time instructor who teaches at two colleges, that means you would need to create two ConferZoom accounts (each with your separate college email address) to use this option at both institutions.

If you receive an error in this screen, the first step is to identify your Canvas account primary email address in Canvas settings. The Canvas primary email address must be the same as the Identity Email in the TechConnect Zoom (ConferZoom) account settings (highlighted below) for Canvas and TechConnect Zoom (ConferZoom) to sync.
Use these instructions to configure your account settings.

TechConnect Zoom New LTI

Many colleges in our system have established their own "Sub-Accounts" for Zoom. If your college is one them, that means you would need to use the new Zoom LTI for Canvas that has an interface that looks similar to the browser-based Zoom dashboard.

Use these instructions to configure your TechConnect Zoom account settings.

We hope you were able to modify your Zoom account settings in the Zoom web portal and explore the features in the Zoom App/Client. The next section is about optimizing your recording environment!
